Extract a self-extracting EXE without running it

  1. Upload the 7-Zip SFX executable using the box above.
  2. Browse the files recovered from the embedded archive.
  3. Open individual files or download the completed result as a ZIP.

What is a 7-Zip SFX archive?

An SFX, or self-extracting archive, combines compressed files with an executable that can unpack them. A 7-Zip SFX usually has an .exe extension even though it carries a 7z payload. This tool reads the supported archive payload without starting the executable or any setup command bundled with it.

The supported family here is 7-Zip SFX. Our extraction tests include a 7-Zip 23.01 SFX stub carrying a 7z archive. Custom stubs, encrypted archives, missing archive parts and other SFX families may not be supported.

From archive files to application content

Recovered files can include programs, documentation, resources and further packages. Supported nested formats are opened within the same extraction budget; supported code can produce readable source beside the original files.

If your EXE is an Inno Setup installer or an NSIS installer, use its dedicated page for compatibility details. For an ordinary executable, use the EXE decompiler and inspector.

7-Zip SFX extraction questions

Is every EXE a self-extracting archive?

No. An EXE may be an ordinary program, an installer or an archive with a built-in extractor. A filename alone does not establish whether it contains an extractable payload.

Can I open a 7z setup SFX file on Mac or Linux?

Yes. Upload the EXE from your browser to inspect a supported archive. You do not need to run its Windows extraction program.

Does this support RAR SFX or InstallShield?

No. This page covers the supported 7-Zip SFX family. RAR SFX, InstallShield and arbitrary custom self-extractors are not supported by this installer extractor.

Can this create an SFX or change its extraction path?

No. This tool opens existing supported SFX files. It does not create executable archives, configure silent-install switches or modify their setup commands.

Extraction limits and partial results

Each upload shares a five-minute extraction and source-recovery budget, with up to 1 GiB of expanded data, 256 MiB per file, 25,000 entries and four nested layers. Worker limits can stop processing sooner. You can browse completed files while processing continues; a ZIP download becomes available when the job finishes.

If a format, version or file cannot be processed, the result explains the limitation and keeps files already recovered. Extraction does not recreate a complete buildable application or the original native source code.
